Commodore's Report
On Wednesday September 22nd during our
General Membership Meeting, our Nominating Committee will be conducting
the nomination of officers for next year. If you have question regarding
the nomination of officers, please contact one of the Committee members,
Ric Murray, Dave Amer or Rodger Dutton, or talk to one a current or past
officers. Being an MBC officer provides you with an opportunity to
represent your club, and assist with various decisions and events. This
is my fourth year of serving Monroe Boat Club by being on the Board.
Yes, it has been a lot of work and has taken a lot of dedication and
many hours. But I can say that I have enjoyed being an Officer of MBC.
If you are interested in becoming more involved with your club, this is
your chance to step forward. Many people like to sit back and talk about
what needs to be changed, but we need people that are willing to make
decisions and changes for the betterment of MBC. There currently are
several offices for which no one has committed to run.
The Annual Meeting, Dinner & Election of Officers is scheduled for
October 22nd. Notification will be sent via snail mail along with the
ballots for Election of Officers. Membership dues are due on November
1st; statements will be mailed the 1st week of October. Any member that
did not complete their required work hours by September 1st will be
billed in accordance with the by-laws. Any first year members that did
not complete their hours will unfortunately lose their membership and
forfeiture any dues and fees paid.
Several months ago it was requested that the By-Law Committee meet and
review the verbiage of our By-Laws. The By-Law Committee (which consists
of the past five Commodores) did so with the assistance of our By-Law
Chairperson Brian Francisco. They recorded Articles and Sections that
they considered bringing to the membership. Over the past couple of
months, this Committee has received seven proposals from members. It is
required that any proposed amendments or changes go to the By-Law
Committee for their review and recommendation. This Committee is not
empowered to prevent a proposed amendment or change from coming before
the general membership. To not overwhelm the membership, the Committee
has decided to hold off presenting the changes they were proposing only
present the proposed changes that were submitted. The Committee will
give their recommendation to the seven proposals. These By-Laws may be
amended by a 2/3 vote of the members voting by mail or present at our
annual meeting (October 22nd). The proposed By-Law changes will be
mailed to each member First-Class mailing thirty (30) days prior to the
meeting date. Ballots and an explanation of the proposed changes will be
included in the notification. PLEASE, read the proposals over carefully
and if you have questions, attend the Annual meeting to discuss the
proposals before voting. Every Tuesday night since May 18th, Tacos have been
available in the Bar area. Thanks go to the Satin Gavel, the Education
Committee, and the Auxiliary for sponsoring the Taco Tuesdays. The last
Taco Tuesday for this year is August 31st, which is the last scheduled
Sail Fleet race night.
Thursday Burger Nights were chaired by Marti Reed and John Davis during
August. Marti and John did a great job, and their enthusiasm is greatly
appreciated. Continued support of this event helps MBC with various
events and projects throughout our club. If anyone is interested in
chairing a month of Burger Nights, please contact V/C Rick Campbell.
I would like to Thank Marilyn Gagne for overseeing the Club Cookouts
throughout the summer. Marilyn scheduled one Friday night each month
where members brought their choice of meat to cook and a dish to pass.
The last two Club Cookouts are September 17th and October 8th. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vice Commodore's Report
The end of July was a time for break
downs around our club. First, the heating/cooling unit that was
installed in November 2008, which is a two-zone unit, was not cooling
the Commodore's Room. After several visits by the installing company, it
was determined that the damper was not functioning properly. Parts were
ordered, and it should be operating properly soon. The dishwasher also
went out and needed parts replaced. This took several weeks because at
first they installed an incorrect part, causing more issues. The main
entrance gate to the parking lot also quit. I ended up taking the motor
out, and having it rebuilt. Ray Barker has worked on the electrical part
of the system, and improved its operating. Please remember that we have
two gates, so if one is not working, use the other. Both our dishwasher
and gate system are very old and will someday need replacement.
I would like to thank the Satin Gavel for purchasing the three
wonderful new Weber Gas Grills to replace the small, old grills under
the Pavilion. Carol Smith, Satin Gavel President, and Jeff McKeever
ordered the grills from Durocher's, which were delivered to the club.
Jeff McKeever, Dennis Kinne and Jeff Morrow are removing the old grills
and installing the new ones. They are available for members use. By
having these individual grills, the large one can be locked so it is
only be used during large functions, which will save money for the club.
A complimentary Steak/Chicken Roast will be held on September
25th for those that gave extra though out the year and earned 40+ work
hours. The final work hour sheets will be posted the first week of
September; please verify your work hours are proper. This will assist us
with the invitations for the 40+ Steak Roast, as well as dues billing. I
would like to thank Financial Secretary Mike Powers for all of his hard
work in collecting and processing the work hours.
Once the final tally is completed, members eligible for this
reward will be contacted. Please respond whether you are able to attend
(and whether you prefer Steak or Chicken so the proper quantity can be
purchased). I would like to thank you all in advance for your efforts to
make our club a wonderful place!
Last November, member
Dan Breiding cleaned out his personal freezer and hosted a Perch &
Walleye Fish Dinner with fries and Cole slaw, with the proceeds being
donated to the club. The event sold out in no time! This year Dan would
like to organize another dinner, and is asking anyone who has fish they
would like to donate to contact him (419)350-8783 or me at
(734)915-6043. If we are able to gather enough fish, he will schedule
the event and publish flyers, as well as post it on the website. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rear Commodore's Report
It's that time again to think about finding good members to volunteer to
be the new Club’s Officers. If you are interested about running for the
Rear Commodore's job, I would be more than happy to let you know what it
entails. So for everyone out there that knows everything about
everything, come on and give it a shot!
Hopefully, if there is enough time
when this newsletter goes out that if you need work hours you can stop
buy or give me a call. The Bar needs plenty of work, and I can set you
up with a small task.
The 5th Annual Car Show is up and
running, and I hope everyone will enjoy this years fun. The Steak Roast
on Friday night, August 27th will feature Sam's Club’s Rib Eyes...try
not to miss it. It is always a sell out. Henry and Caroline Pierson will
be donating Sweet Corn, so a huge thank you goes out to them.
Speaking of barbecues, I would like
to thank the MBC Satin Gavel for the 3 grills that have been purchased
from Durocher's in
A
big thank you goes out to DJ Louie Dallman for spinning the tunes in the
Bar on August 14th...what a great time. Louie knows how to get the place
rocking!

MBC Sailing Ladies took to
the water on Aug 14 for the annual MBC Ladies Race. Organized by Penny
Dorcey-Naber and Casey Fillion, all entrants were treated to gift bags
filled with items from supporting sponsors
Following the race everyone gathered at the BBQ Pavilion for a
potluck dinner, socializing, and awards of posters and flags, as well as
the historic MBC Half-Hull trophy for the best finisher in each
division. Congratulations to each participant! Spinnaker Division:
A Special Thanks to Martie Reed for chairing Burger Thursdays during
August. She has done an excellent job of producing a wonderful series of
meals for the club, has shopped for fresh vegetables, and gotten
top-of-the-season fresh tomatoes donated from member’s gardens. She’s
also made wonderful soups that sell out every week, then stays late to
ensure the kitchen is spotless for the next club event. Thank You
Martie!!
September Rum Series will be attempted again this year. It will be held
the first three Tuesday evenings in September starting at 7pm, and
sailing to one mark and returning. The days are getting shorter but the
weather is still warm, so this is a chance to get some extra sailing in
before the end of the year.
The MBC Solo Challenge on Saturday August 28 (in conjunction with the
Car Show) is the only single-handed sailboat race sponsored by a
Labor Day Cruise Sunday Sept 5: All MBC boaters, both Sail and Power,
are welcome to participate in a day-cruise out to the harbor light, down
the coastline, and back to the Club BBQ Pavilion. This is an informal
outing, beginning about 1pm. Cruise in style and in the company of your
friends as you enjoy the last holiday weekend of the summer! Upon your
return to MBC, bring something to grill and a dish to pass and enjoy a
great time on the lawn overlooking the harbor.
These have been a lot of fun in the past, and everyone is welcome
to join in.
September is the month to go back to school as well as to start thinking
about Haul Out. Pull out your spring commissioning checklist and review
heavily used or worn items that will make good winter projects. Plan to
change your engine and drive train oil before haul out. Please DO NOT
dispose of old oil in the club dumpsters or leave it on the club
grounds! You can take it to just about any automotive oil change place
for recycling.
While the weather is
nice, take a walk to the storage yard to check out your cradle, trailer
or jack-stands. Add new protective pads or carpet if the existing ones
are worn.
Now is also a great time to clean and wax your hull before winter
storage.
Nautical Phrase: Slush Fund - A slushy slurry of fat was obtained by
boiling or scraping the empty salted meat storage barrels on old sailing
ships. This stuff was called "slush" was often sold ashore by the ship's
cook for the benefit of himself or the crew. The money so derived became
known as a slush fund. Upcoming Sailing Events: -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dock Master's Report
Greetings from the Docks! It’s hard to believe but September is upon us!
The season has been great and I want to thank everyone for all of the
help I have received this year. Many members have constantly ‘been
there’ for me this summer helping with every aspect of my job...thank
you so much!
Please e-mail (or call) me if you’ll be vacating your dock for an
extended period of time; I regularly receive requests for dockage and it
would help me to know what is available (and it’s a dock rule). The new
Rosters contain the revised Dock Rules; please take the time to read
them. As autumn approaches, it is important to remember the water levels
will be rising and falling rapidly; if you plan to keep your boat in
until the “bitter end” like myself, please maintain your lines. We have
many dedicated members that try to keep an eye out, but it is the
member’s responsibility to maintain their boat and lines.
Many have asked about the status of electrical metering. We were
unable to install meters this year; consequently there will be no
electrical charges for the 2010 season. The 2010 Board, with
recommendation from the Dock Committee, did approve electrical metering
and billing. Electrical metering is in our new Dock Rules and the 2011
bills should reflect the possibility of additional charges for
electricity.
Again, thank you to everyone for your support; it really has been
a privilege and I hope members will consider running for office for
2011.
As always, see you at the club!

Auxiliary Report
First, I would like to let everyone know that Taco Tuesdays for the
month of July and August were sponsored by the Auxiliary (the Sail Fleet
chaired Burger Thursdays for August).
October 15th will be the Annual Meeting for the Auxiliary; at
this time we will elect new officers. We need some new people in office
with some new ideas! I hear plenty of suggestions from people when I am
at the club, and if you would like to affect change, you need to run for
office. Please contact Mollie Wood if you intend to run, as she is in
charge of the ballots.
I would also like to add that it takes many people to do the work
required to keep this organization running. We have a number of
Auxiliary members with 50+ work hours, and then some with 1-2 or just
the minimum of 5.
Please volunteer to help when you can! More people would make
less work for the few that do volunteer.
See you
at the club!

Education Committee Report

AED defibrillator training, October (date TBA)
November 18, Advanced Weather Workshop, Larry Cole & Don Dietz,
Instructors
A huge thank you to the wonderful volunteers who worked the Education
Committee Regatta booth, the Kids’ Korner, and the Thunderfest weekend
breakfasts. The two weekends were successful, financially and in
attendance. The volunteers were Don Blouin, Penny Dorcey-Naber, Carolyn
and Rodger Dutton, Steve and Angie Hudkins, Bill Huntley, Jeff Johnson,
Barbara and John Sherwin, Barbara and Tom Valmassei, Bob Zaki, and Carol
Zielinski.
AED Defibrillator…MBC’s defibrillator is located on the wall between the
playroom and the banquet room. It came to mind that members should be
reminded of this when I heard about a 50 year-old gentleman at another
club who died recently because the club did not have a defibrillator and
the emergency crews could not reach him in time. We’ll offer a training
session during October.
